  1. Satellites to detect drug cultivation in Odisha

The issue in news

The Odisha Space Application Centre (OSAC) has proposed to help law enforcement agencies detect illicit cannabis cultivation using remote sensing and artificial intelligence technologies.

  • The proposal submitted to the State Excise Department says high resolution satellite imagery can be used for detecting cultivation of hemp, a variety of cannabis.
  • Besides developing mobile-based applications for field level officials, OSAC has proposed to create a mechanism for citizen reporting through a mobile application.

 

Concerns:

  • Odisha is one of the leading cannabis-producing states in India.
  • Cannabis is widely grown in forested regions of Malkangiri, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Kandhamal, Boudh, Rayagada, Gajapati, Angul and Nayagarh districts.
  • Though law enforcement agencies have intensified their raids, it is difficult to trace the cultivation on a real-time basis.

 

  1. Mission Sagar – II

The issue in news

India had launched Mission Sagar in May 2020 to assist island nations in the Eastern Indian Ocean.

About Mission Sagar – II:

  • As part of Mission Sagar – II, the Indian Government is assisting Sudan to overcome natural calamities and the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Towards the same, Indian Naval Ship Airavat is carrying a consignment of 100 tonnes of food aid for the people of Sudan. Under this mission, apart from Sudan, the countries of South Sudan, Eritrea and Djibouti will also be provided assistance.
  • Mission Sagar-II is in line with the Prime Minister’s vision of Security and Growth for All in the Region ‘SAGAR’ and highlights the importance accorded by India to relations with her maritime neighbours and further strengthens the existing bond.

 

  1. Malabar Exercise 2020

The issue in news

Phase 1 of the Malabar Exercise 2020 is scheduled to be held from 3rd to 6th November.

Main points

  • The 24th edition of the MALABAR naval exercise is scheduled in two phases in November 2020.
  • Phase 1 is set to commence off Vishakhapatnam in the Bay of Bengal.

The participants are:

  • Indian Navy (IN)
  • United States Navy (USN)
  • Japan Maritime Self Defence Force (JMSDF)
  • Royal Australian Navy (RAN)

 

Indian Navy participating units are:

  • Destroyer Ranvijay
  • Frigate Shivalik
  • Off Shore Patrol Vessel Sukanya
  • Fleet Support Ship Shakti
  • Submarine Sindhuraj
  • Advanced Jet Trainer Hawk
  • Long-range maritime patrol aircraft P-8I
  • Dornier maritime patrol aircraft
  • Helicopters

 

  • Although the Malabar Exercise started off in 1992 as a bilateral exercise between India and the US, Japan joined in 2015 to make it a trilateral exercise. Singapore and Australia have been non-permanent members previously.

 

  • MALABAR 20 Phase 1 would witness complex and advanced naval exercises including surface, anti-submarine and anti-air warfare operations, cross deck flying, seamanship evolutions and weapon firing exercises.

 

  • Phase 2 of MALABAR 20 is scheduled to be conducted in the Arabian Sea in mid-November 2020.

  1. Ganga Utsav 2020

The issue in news

Recently, the Ganga Utsav 2020 has begun which celebrates the glory of the National river Ganga.

 

Main points

 

  • It is a cultural and educational festival to celebrate the glory of the holy river Ganga.
  • Aim: To connect masses to the cause of river rejuvenation and sensitive them about ecological issues through conversations and entertainment.
  • Activities
    • The three-day event of Ganga Utsav activities broadly can be put in 6 broad themes. 
    • These broad themes are Ganga Dialogue, Story Telling, Cultural Events, Mini Ganga Quest, Ganga Film Festival, and Release of Movies and Publications.
  • During the Ganga Utsav, several activities will also be held in Ganga states by the local administration and NGOs, who are associated with Namami Gange Mission.
