2: IMF Approves $7 Billion Bailout for Pakistan

Context: The IMF board approved a $7 billion Extended Fund Facility (EFF) for Pakistan’s struggling economy.

About the IMF:

  • Established in 1944, currently has 190 member countries.
  • Provides financial assistance to countries facing economic crises in exchange for reforms.

Lending Mechanisms:

  • Stand-By Arrangements (SBA): Short-term balance of payments issues (12-24 months).
  • Extended Fund Facility (EFF): Used for countries with prolonged economic problems (up to 4 years). Focuses on medium- to long-term structural reforms, fiscal policies, and debt sustainability. (Pakistan’s case)
  • Rapid Financing Instrument (RFI): Urgent needs due to shocks, disasters, or conflict.
  • Poverty Reduction and Growth Trust (PRGT): Concessional loans for low-income countries.
  • Flexible Credit Line (FCL) & Precautionary Liquidity Line (PLL): Precautionary funding for countries with strong fundamentals facing external shocks.

3: India’s Rise as a Global Ethanol Leader

Key Points:

  • World’s Third Largest Producer and Consumer: India has surpassed China to become the third largest producer and consumer of ethanol globally.
  • Sugarcane Growth: Area of sugarcane cultivation increased by 18% and production by 40% between 2014-24.
  • Second Largest Sugarcane Producer: India follows Brazil in sugarcane production.
