Context- 5G technology is expected to be launched globally by 2020 but government plans to start trial from this year itself.
What is 5G technology?
● it is the next generation wireless communication technology.
Need- with increased technological progress and digital India programme as more amd more devices go online, there is an increased traffic leading to slower speed.
● 5G will enable us to handle 10,000 tomes more traffic than 4G along with giving 20 times more speed.
Advantages- ● 5G with increased speed and traffic will be the foundation of Virtual Reality, Internet of Things, Autonomous driving, tele-medicine, Arificial Intellrgence and much more.
● it supports critical applications like financial transactiona and health care. ex. 5G enables instant transmission of videos and data, so doctors and surgeons can consult and operate through robotic scalpel.
● Incorpoeate AI in our daily lives like it will make driverless cars a reality by facilitating faster vehicle to vehicle communication in order to keep safe distance from each other so fewer accidents and less traffic congestion.
● Facilitate IOT by enabling smart devices to exchange data seemlessly.
● Greater speed will lead to digital growth and employment.
Challenges- Inadequate infrastructure, higher cost, still under research, many old devices will not support 5g, environmental and health concerns and security and privacy issues.
Government initiatives-
● BharatNet project launched in 2017 for providing digital infrastructure on an affordable basis
● National Optical Fibre Network to bring broadband revolution in rural areas
● National Telecom Policy from March 2018 to introduce 5G
● Govt set up a high-level forum to evaluate 5G roadmap for 2020
● And also giving waivers to private telecoms.
Way forward-
● Early 5G technology deployment will push Indian companies to early manufacture and development of 5G products and solutions which might lead to new ides and innovations and give a push to our IPR in 5G standards.
● Also early deployment will help Indian industries capture both domestic and international market
