Role: Oversees urban housing and development policies in India.

Challenges: Rapid urbanization, improving services, reducing poverty, and controlling slums.

Key Schemes (with Extensions):

  • Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY-U):Provides pucca housing to EWS & LIG till Dec 2024.
  • Smart Cities Mission:Comprehensive urban development across 100 cities.

  • Swachh Bharat Mission – Urban (SBM-U):Aims for open defecation free cities and improved sanitation.
  • Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT):Enhances water security and sanitation in 485 cities.
  • Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NULM):Reduces urban poverty through skill training and livelihood support.
  • Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act (RERA):Regulates the real estate sector and protects home buyers.
  • PM Street Vendor’s Atma Nirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi):Provides loans to street vendors for working capital.
  • National Mission on Sustainable Habitat (NMSH):Promotes low-carbon urban development and climate resilience.
  • Urban Transport Initiatives:Focuses on mass transit systems (Metro) and public transport.
  • Central Vista Redevelopment:Enhances government infrastructure in Delhi.
  • Pradhan Mantri-Unauthorized Colonies in Delhi Awas Adhikar Yojana (PMUDAY):Confers ownership rights to residents of unauthorized colonies in Delhi.
