BOMBALI VIRUS STRAIN AND EBOLA Researchers discovered a new strain of Ebola Virus In bats in northern Bombali region of Sierra Leone.

What is Ebola?

ü It deteriorates a person’s physical and mental abilities during their prime working years and has no cure.

ü Ultimately, the weakened individual succumbs to pneumonia, heart failure or other complications.

ü Everyone has the gene that causes HD, but only those that inherit the expansion of the gene will develop

Developments in autonomous technologies

RADAR technology is not affected by adverse weather conditions such as clouds, rainfall or fogs.

LiDAR pulses are adversely affected by atmospheric weather conditions such as dense fogs, smoke and even rain.

 

The most widespread RADAR usage is for military purposes. Airplanes, weather

forecasting, etc.

Ground-penetrating RADAR is used in geology to determine the composition of Earth’s crust

It is mainly used in mapping archeological sites, for urban planning, crop management, etc.

It is also used in atmospheric sciences (to measure atmospheric densities of various components such as aerosols and other atmospheric gases).

 

Two of the most talked about self-driving advancements come from Google and Tesla(Waymo and Autopilot).

 

Waymo: Google’s autonomous car development company. It stands for a new ‘way forward in mobility’.

ways to turn asteroids into giant, autonomous spacecrafts, which could fly to outposts in space

 

ü The objective of this study is for Made In Space (MIS) to establish the concept feasibility of using the age-old technique of analog computers and mechanisms to convert entire asteroids into enormous autonomous mechanical spacecraft.

ü The company plans to use 3D printing to turn the asteroids into self-flying vehicles by 2030

ü The concept received funding through NASA’s Innovative Advanced Concepts programme, which will provide $100,000 for feasibility studies

 

Mechanism

ü The company is considering sending an advanced robotic “Seed Craft” out to rendezvous with a succession of near-Earth asteroids in space, as part of its long-term project.

ü The Seed Craft would harvest material from the space rocks, then use this feedstock to construct propulsion, navigation, energy-storage and other key systems onsite with the aid of 3D printing

ü A P Shah Committee report highlighted the issues and sought safeguards from illegal collection of data and its misuse.

ü The Bill seeks to provide for the regulation of use and application of DNA technology.

ü DNA regulation board:

o The board will certify labs authorized to carry out DNA testing and lay down procedure and guidelines for collection, storage, sharing and deletion of DNA information.

o The Secretary of the Department of Biotechnology has been made the ex-officio chairman of the proposed DNA Regulatory Board.

ü National DNA Data Bank:

o A National DNA Databank and certain regional DNA Databanks will store DNA profiles received from DNA labs in a specified format.

ü Limited purpose of identification:

o The Bill states that DNA data contained in any DNA labs and Databank “shall be used for the purpose of facilitating identification of the person and not for any other purpose”.

o It will only be made available to facilitate the identification of persons in criminal cases.

ü Safeguard against misuse:

o The Bill states that disclosure of DNA information to unauthorized persons, or for unauthorized purposes, shall lead to penalties up to three years in jail or up to Rs 1 lakh as fine.
